FIVE THINGS NOT TO MISS
5. The museums of the capital city - free to everyone!
4. The stunning Renaissance architecture of Úbeda -- few places in Spain have Úbeda's riches when it comes to sixteenth-century palaces, cheek-by jowl throughout the old town
3. Discovering the area during the middle of the week? Be sure to check out the Spanish Parador's Ruta de los Nazaries midweek offer - three nights in four-star accommodation in the Paradors of Cazlora, Úbeda and Jaén, starting from €115 per person.
2. Love the the sight of acres and acres of cherry trees in bloom? From now until the end of March, the best place to see them is the Sierra Mágina, southwest of the capital city.
1. Cycling along the Via Verde del Aceite, accompanied only by the sound of the wind swaying the branches of the olive trees.
WHEN TO GO
The entire province is at its prettiest between February and late April, when poppies, crownvetch and canola colour the fields. It's warm, but not so warm that you find your cycling days limited by the most intense hours of the sun. Can't make it now? Plan a trip for early October to mid-December, before the rains hit. You'll see the area's olive oil industry go into full swing, and maybe get the chance to see an almazara (traditional olive oil mill) in full swing.
