Its name, in Arabic, means "waystation"
- but don't pass it by!
Until recently, Jaén (pronounced "high-ENN") was the only provincial capital of Andalucía that was better known for its agriculture than its culture, tourism and history. Since the mid-1990s, it's becoming an increasingly popular destination for all kinds of active tourism: mountain bikers, cycle tourists, rock climbers and hikers have discovered the charms of its provincial parks, and it boasts the biggest number of greenway kilometres per habitant in all of Spain. Look no further if you want to get away from the hordes of pink-roasted tourists on the coast; this is Andalucía at its finest and most undiscovered.
