GREENWAYS DAY
This year, Sunday, May 13th is the day set aside to celebrate Spain’s network of
Vías Verdes, currently totalling more than 1,600 km of rail trails.
Where to go
Best bets for a weekend away include the Vía Verde del Río Oja, which runs parallel to the river which gives the wine region its name; the Vía Verde del Tajuña, which lies close to Madrid’s Metro system; the Vía Verde del Carrilet, in the heart of Gerona’s professional cyclist country; and the Vía Verde de la Sierra, with its network of station-hotels.
