Over 1100 kilometres of rail trails have been recovered and reconditioned since 1999; the Camino de Santiago attracts tens of thousands of cyclists ever year; and regional governments have been designing routes, such as the Ruta del Quijote and the Ruta del Cid, meant to appeal to cyclists, as well as other lovers of outdoors sports.
